[Once he gets past the urge to just spew apologies, once he feels a little less like tearing his hair out, he gets on the network.]

You know, I don't remember if I ever said anything about it. But there's an animal clinic on board. [He holds up a set of keys, jingles them.] That's what those keys were, a while ago. I've got some experience working in one so, um. If anything happens, I've got stuff for splints and vaccines and worms and stuff. Since it'd be really easy for one to infect a whole bunch, you know?

[He pauses, because he remembers how people said apologies were unnecessary, that flood-selves weren't real, but like before, it just feels necessary, just to get it off his chest.]

And I'm sorry I was so...I'm just sorry.

[He thinks Alana probably needs more than a straightforward apology, though he's not sure why. Something tells him she doesn't really have friends here, and while it's kind of weird trying to be a friend to someone who could be, like, a school therapist or counselor or something, he also thinks it'd be nice to know that someone's thinking of you.

Or something. He's seriously not over thinking it.

So eventually, Scott makes his way to her door, knocking. He knows there's a dog in there.]

[Alana smiles a little. Really, Scott was nothing compared to what was waiting for her after the flood.]

It was a nice break, honestly.

Really? [He leans forward on the counter.] How come? I mean, how were you affected?

[Alana shakes her head a little.]

I didn't remember anything about this place. There was a lot less to think about.

What, like day one? My first day was zombies. Well, a zombie. So. Totally jealous.

Well, I don't know if I would be. That flood's not exactly something I'd want to walk into without much of an idea about how this place works.

Yeah, I guess. I still can't figure out what that flood was. It was like, a whole bunch all at once or something.

I'm just glad it seems like no one was hurt. A lot more could have gone wrong with everyone than just a few bad attitudes or confusion about where and who they were.

Tell me about it. [He drops his face into his hands for just a few seconds.] I guess it's a good thing Bruce was scary on the other Barge. I didn't really want to get on Hulk's bad side.

[Alana smiles and gives a small nod.]

Well, that's one way of looking at it.

It's like, kind of positive thinking, right?

[He guzzles most of what's left of the soda.]

Hey, did you ever get volunteers? Or - I dunno, do you still call them clients if they're not paying?

[There's a small laugh.]

There is such a thing as pro bono, Scott. [She nods though.] I've had a few express interest and show up to their appointments.

Pro what? [At least he didn't think it had something to do with U2, right?]

Pro bono. It's Latin that means 'for good.' It's what we call clients that we're willing to see without charge.

Oh. That's pretty cool. I didn't know people did that.

Not everyone does. [A beat.] Or can. Office space and bills are unfortunately expensive.

Yeah, I bet. [He does not live in the most affluent home.] Do you do a lot of pro...bono? Pro bono work?

[Alana shakes her head a little.]

Not as much as I would like. The setting and populations I typically work with doesn't exactly always allow for it. Some of my clients are able to get help through charity, but it's not really the same thing.

What's different?

If the charities can't afford to continue supporting them, their treatment will stop if they can't come up with another form of payment.

Oh.

That really sucks. I didn't know it was that hard to like. Get help, if you needed it.

It's unfortunate and shouldn't be that way.

Yeah. We don't really have a lot of money. And I had asthma, before. I still can't believe inhalers are so expensive. I mean, what if you don't have eighty bucks for it, you know?

[Alana nods a little.]

It has to be difficult on your parents, too.

My mom. [It's an easy correction. He doesn't really count his dad for anything, anymore.] And yeah. She works a lot.

[And he'd been determined to pay for his own inhalers, once Deaton hired him. He shrugs.] At least I don't need them now.

[Alana nods to acknowledge the correction and files it away.]

She's probably relieved about that. One less thing to worry about.
