[He's been back about an hour, just sitting in his room. It's not that he doesn't want to be here. He does. He needs to be here, to make things right again, and still all he wants is to rewind the clock, to go back to weeks ago, before their darkness spilled out into the world. Everything had looked bright. Okay. And now...
Now he understands why Stiles didn't want him to go back. Nothing will be like it was. Not until he saves Allison.
And he can't do that by letting people think he isn't here. He gets up, splashes water on his face, stares at himself in the mirror until he thinks his expression is normal. It's close enough. Drying off, he goes back to sit on the bed and picks up the communicator. When it clicks on, he smiles, and it's still Scott underneath, even if it's not quite as bright. He's older, though, only a year but it feels longer. His hair is shorter, he looks stronger. He's trying to hide the rest, and doing a decent job of it. But only decent.]
Hey, guys. I'm back.
[He waves his free hand. Semi-awkward Scott McCall is still under the new haircut! And is that a tattoo peeking out from under his left sleeve?]
So, did I miss anything good? I think...I was a troll, the last flood. How long ago was that?

[SPAM WITH ADDED DOGS]
Cooooooeeee! Welcome wagon!
[SPAM WITH ADDED DOGS]
So he gets up, opens the door and smiles. He holds his hands out for the dogs, scratching their heads.]
Hey! Did you bring my doughnuts?
[SPAM]
You smelled 'em coming, didn't you? Oooh, it's good to see you back.
[Iris can tell, as easily as he can scent or hear, exactly how much of his time has passed. She doesn't know the details, but she saw Stiles' post, she can taste the weight of new pain on him. After a moment, she holds him out at arms' length to look him up and down.]
Been bad, 'asn't it, my darling?
[SPAM]
[He grins, and lets her pull him in. He doesn't know her well enough to cry on her shoulder - she's not his mom - but she's the kind of person to care about you, and that's kind of comforting.
Still, he has to make himself make eye contact when she pulls back. His smile shrinks, tinged by sadness.]
It hasn't been great.
private
And he's not totally sure of how to approach this, because he doesn't know if Scott wants to talk, or will be pissed to know Stiles said something, or what, so. There's sort of a pause while he tries to figure out what to say.]
How long was it for you?
private
[That's just a little mind blowing.]
It was a year, I think. Maybe more? I dunno, it's all kind of fuzzy, when I was here last.
Re: private
[It's a weak joke, but it's still something.] Do you need any help catching up on stuff?
private
[He smiles, though, shrugs.] Is there anything to really catch up on?

[Gentle in its normalcy.]
Is that ink?
[private]
Huh? Oh-- [His hand goes to his arm, and he nods, pulling up his sleeve. It's just two bands, the upper thicker than the lower.] Yeah. I got it a couple months ago.
[private]
[She tugs down one of her own cuffs, showing thick black lines around little panels of solid color, like stained glass. Part of a cracked yellow balance scale is tucked between shiny pink old burn scars, bits of other designs sliding under her sleeve.]
We can swap stories sometime, if you want.
[She's not asking, she's not putting him on the spot. But she's there to talk to sometime. If he wants.]
[private]
He knows now he'll never call her. The wound will never close. He tugs the sleeve down again, and fills his lungs to tell her it's not much of a story. That's not what comes out.]
Yeah, okay. Maybe later?
[It's not a brush off. Scott doesn't really do brush offs.]

He forces himself to take a deep breath.]
Hey. It's only been a few days here. [He wants to ask, but asking seems really stupid. Of course Scott isn't okay.]
Private
Yeah, I heard. Nothing crazy happened, then? [His smile is wry, and sad. He knows now.]
Private
No, it's been quiet. Calm. [Calmer than things have been at home in a long, long time.]
Private
[He nods, lets out a breathe. For a long moment, he doesn't say anything, looking down. Then he swallows, meets Stiles' eyes again.]
Thanks. For not telling me.

. . . Nice tat.
What happened?
[Because something happened, Cassel can see that. He's not as good at reading people as he thinks he is, but even he can tell, Scott isn't right.]
private
[It's a little like a punch to the chest, and he runs his hand over his jaw. It's just a distraction, small movement that lets him look away.]
A lot. It's been like a year. Everyone's been saying it was only a few days, here. How are you doing? Did the death toll finally wear off?
private
Scott. [He says it quietly, but it means everything. It means you're my friend, don't hide things from me, it means what hurts, it means why did this happen and who do I go after.]
[He doesn't think he's ever said anybody's name quite like that before.]

[It's a sharp, sharp relief to see Jack still here. Not a surprise, since the first thing he did was check to make sure his Item still worked - but it's till a relief to see him.]
It was, uh...eventful.

[He's offering more because he feels like he's supposed to - not that he doesn't care about Scott, or doesn't care about what happened to him while he was home, but because he's honestly kind of terrible about reaching out to other people sometimes. Why are you a doctor?]
